Like most upper-class families, summers were spent at the coast and Carl Emil bought a plot of land in the newly established bathing and spa resort of Lyckorna. During the last decades of the 19th century, members of the country’s socialites flocked to the town, where there were social houses with restaurants, cold and hot baths, and daily steamboat and rail connections. Prominent guests such as Victor Hasselblad, Viktor Rydberg and King Oscar II sometimes visited “Lyckorna Bad- och Havsanstalt”, which was built in 1877 by the Scotsman Robert MacFie.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” column_structure=”2_3,1_3″ max_width=”2560px” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″ make_equal=”on”][et_pb_column _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” type=”2_3″ theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_image src=”https://www.villasjotorp.se/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/022ymV1iMb8g.jpg” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” title_text=”022ymV1iMb8g” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″ custom_padding=”|40px||||” border_width_all=”5px” border_color_all=”#FFFFFF”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” type=”1_3″ theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_image src=”https://www.villasjotorp.se/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/C._Emil_Haeger_2.jpeg” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” title_text=”PENTAX Image” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″ border_width_all=”5px” border_color_all=”#FFFFFF” custom_margin=”|||-25px||”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” max_width=”2560px” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″][et_pb_column _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” type=”4_4″ theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”Times New Roman||||||||” text_text_color=”#FFFFFF” text_font_size=”17px” header_font=”Times New Roman|700|||||||” header_text_color=”#FFFFFF” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Haeger himself designed the family’s summer house, which was given a contemporary design with elements of Norse dragon heads and Swiss style. The house was manufactured in parts at a carpentry factory in Lilla Edet and transported on barges along the Göta River, via Gothenburg and up to Lyckorna. The building was erected on a sturdy natural stone plinth built on the steep slope. The work was done by carpenter Nilsson and his craftsmen. The foundations were laid in 1899 and the villa was ready for occupation in the summer of 1901.

The structure was of frame construction, with cladding of alternating horizontal and vertical paneling, and the roof was covered with folded sheet metal. On the ground floor were the living room and the children’s bedroom, as well as Mr. and Mrs. Haeger’s bedchamber, with its own door between the rooms.

On the second floor, there are a number of bedrooms and a large stairwell. Inside, the rooms were characterized by beadboard, Arts & Crafts-inspired wallpaper and decoratively painted ceilings and moldings. Emil’s wife, the artist Anna Haeger, was responsible for the coloring and decoration of the house.

The food was cooked on an iron stove downstairs. In the former hot kitchen, guests can now crawl into a large iron bed that used to belong to Charles de Gaulle. There was a large wine cellar and special space for ice to make good use of the food. A large open veranda faced the sea, with a remarkable three-tiered roof covered with abundant foliage. The stables and outbuildings were built in the same style.

The Haeger family lived in the house during the summers and the winters were spent in Lilla Edet. In an interview on May 6, 1977 with Inger Dejke, Gunnar Haeger says: “I have stayed at Lyckorna every summer for over 80 years. The family, that is, my mother with the whole apparatus moved out around June 10. We were 6 brothers and 2 sisters. The move was a big event, the service was something completely different. There was a cook and an assistant cook, 2 maids, a gardener and his wife. The gardener lived at Lyckhus next door. We also had a farmhand.

Very often my father had foreign businessmen as guests. Mother had a German fräulein, she was German herself and wanted us children to learn the language. My father was first married to my mother’s younger sister, but she died in childbirth. Then my mother came here when her sister was ill, and that’s how things turned out.

There was a lot of luggage to take from Lilla Edet. The journey was by horse and cart. There was no bridge between Ström and Lilla Edet at this time. The shuttles went to a ferry a couple of kilometers up the canal and then down to Ström. Since I grew up I have ridden that way, traveled by horse and cart, motorcycle and the whole development.

Father did not drive a car. He had a handsome carriage with beautiful horses and elegant carriage. He never had a vacation, well maybe in connection with all his trips abroad, mostly to Germany and England. He came out to Lyckorna on weekends and the big move back to Lilla Edet took place after September 12 when father always wanted to celebrate his birthday at Villa Sjötorp.”

In 1919, C.E. Haeger retired and responsibility for the mill fell to his youngest son Olle, who at the time was in Paris studying to be a violinist. He gave his siblings an ultimatum: in order to interrupt his dream in Paris, he had to spend several years in America and study the manufacture of creped paper.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” background_image=”https://www.villasjotorp.se/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/DSC01236-scaled-1.jpg” parallax=”on” parallax_method=”off” min_height=”20vh” height=”35vh” border_width_top=”5px” border_color_top=”#FFFFFF” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”#b3c3ac” custom_padding=”0px|||||” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” max_width=”2560px” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″][et_pb_column _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” type=”4_4″ theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” text_font=”Times New Roman||||||||” sticky_enabled=”0″ text_text_color=”#FFFFFF” text_font_size=”17px” header_font=”Times New Roman|700|||||||” header_text_color=”#FFFFFF”]

On his return, new investments were needed at the mill. A collective, rather loose in outline, but with a common desire to nurture and preserve. Word of the house by the sea spread. A large, sumptuous, mysterious old house. A house of freedom, community, rest and celebration.

With nostalgia, many of us look back on the “Hippiesomararna” at Sjötorp. They were artists, writers, visionaries. Magical meetings between people who found themselves in a time when life would be shaped for the future. Communal dinners at long tables on the terrace and deep and life-changing conversations in the summer nights. Everything was possible at Sjötorp. We meditated and drank herbal tea and red wine. We danced and grilled whole lambs. Bread was baked, herring pickles and pork juice were made. Often there was rock’n’roll and nightly sea baths with a bonfire.

Hotels and restaurants in stages

In 1995, Ellika Mogenfelt reacquired the former Haegerska villa, her grandfather’s father’s summer villa, and began work on developing today’s Villa Sjötorp into “The many guests’ house”. A meeting place for individuals and companies where culture, history and nature embrace the visitors and create a peace and an atmosphere that is unique. Villa Sjötorp is today a place for effective meetings and a paradise for active life enjoyers.

Ellika, with experience in the restaurant world, envisioned a meeting place at Lyckorna, a place where people could stay, eat, enjoy, maybe listen to music. The plans were no clearer than that.

At that time, the maintenance of the villa was seriously neglected, the roof was leaking and the paint was peeling. The house lacked both central heating and hot water. The wood shavings that once provided some insulation had collapsed, leaving a very drafty structure. Despite, or perhaps because of its age, the villa was well preserved. In the courtyard, the beautiful outhouse is well preserved, but its function has now been replaced by modern indoor water closets. The fixed furnishings and all the original decorations remained and the frame was still dry.

From day one, all renovations were planned in collaboration with master builder Henrik Benjegård. The craftsmen’s skills and creativity have been crucial to the result. “Henrik and I were in complete agreement on how the work should be done,” says Ellika, noting that she would never have completed the project if the craftsmen had been skeptical about her idea of preserving and maintaining with little means. Henrik, for his part, remembers that it was a fun job, not least because there were no drawings and no two parts of the building were alike. Everything was solved on site, without general solutions.

In the early years, budgets were tight and efforts were minimal. “Better nothing than bad” was the motto. To run the restaurant in the house, a kitchen was first built – as in a separate box, a room-within-a-room on the ground floor of the villa. This meant that the original interior did not have to be demolished, but could still be brought up to an acceptable standard.

“The biggest work started after a few years,” says Henrik. “We opened up the bead board meter by meter to inject Ekofiber into the loose wool. It was an extensive job. In the ceiling, we had to loosen the beaded plaster, bolt it down, insulate it and put the original panel back again.”

Gradually, geothermal heating and a water-based central heating system were installed. The old cast iron radiators came to Henrik when the Bergslagsbanan station house and Josefsson’s shop blocks in Gothenburg were renovated. The radiators were blasted and prepared for installation in Villa Sjötorp, where they appear to have stood since the house was built.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” max_width=”2560px” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″ module_alignment=”center” custom_padding=”2px||0px|||”][et_pb_column _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” type=”4_4″ theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_image src=”https://www.villasjotorp.se/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/64-916A6151.jpg.jpeg” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” title_text=”64—916A6151.jpg” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″ border_width_all=”5px” border_color_all=”#FFFFFF” align=”center” max_height=”500px”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” max_width=”2560px” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″ custom_padding=”||16px|||”][et_pb_column _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” type=”4_4″ theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” text_font=”Times New Roman||||||||” text_text_color=”#FFFFFF” text_font_size=”17px” sticky_enabled=”0″ header_font=”Times New Roman|700|||||||” header_text_color=”#FFFFFF” header_2_font=”Times New Roman||||||||” header_2_text_color=”#FFFFFF” header_2_font_size=”30px”]

The next major step was bathrooms. But how to force a bathroom into every hotel room without altering the structure or destroying the character of the rooms? By carefully loosening and reusing the fixed furnishings, moving walls out of the way and using every conceivable trick in the book, the carpenters succeeded in their aim to create modern bathrooms that look as if they had been there all along. Henrik Benjegård is still pleased with the effort, which involved problem-solving at many levels. Ellika, who was going to decorate, remembers how she gorged herself on colorful tile catalogs, only to end up choosing a simple eggshell color. The house didn’t allow for anything else.

In Haeger’s time, the house was not lived in during the winter, but inner sashes were still made for all the windows. In 1995, the sashes were in their original condition in the attic, waiting to be glazed. A couple of full days in spring and fall are set aside to put in and take out the interior windows.

This is how the family villa of the industrial magnate Haeger has been transformed from a private summer retreat into a welcoming hotel, open to all who want to enjoy this magical place. The fact that age has been allowed to take its toll gives the house its very special character, the once lofty features have been stripped away and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.

Ellika Mogenfelt has transformed the Haegerska villa from a private summer house into a welcoming hotel of the highest quality. The house wants to introduce itself to every new, expectant visitor. Whether you come here in spring, summer, fall or winter.

Villa Sjötorp is a unique hotel in its own way, with fourteen personally decorated rooms. The swing that swings in the blood book brings to mind Kristina from Duvemåla, while guests slowly enjoy their meals on the veranda or in the dining room and a fabulous sunset in the street with Orust’s huge body as a backdrop. It is good for body and soul to stay at Villa Sjötorp.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″ max_width=”2560px” custom_padding=”21px|||||”][et_pb_column _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” type=”4_4″ theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″ text_text_color=”#FFFFFF”]

” Summer night’s smile “

I arrive by car from the train and am struck by how fantastic the house is. I had somehow forgotten about it, or maybe I had never seen Sjötorp in the sunshine. Now the old villa shines like something dreamy and enchanting where it lies in total peace in a clearing. Yet there is a bit of theater about the old house and its surroundings. The smile of the summer night, Bergsman’s movie, comes to mind when I walk up to the house. Two older, elegantly dressed women are walking towards the veranda, chatting eagerly. A father, shouting happily in English, photographs his wife rocking their daughter on his lap. Two young lovers walk down to the bath surrounded by each other. A movie clip? A snapshot. A day at Villa Sjötorp.

On this particular day, these guests were the soul and content of Villa Sjötorp. Next week, maybe the very next day, maybe in just a few hours, the scenario will change. Perhaps it is like that everywhere and always. The whole world as a stage and all that. But at Sjötorp, the decor is so Bergman, but without anxiety and melancholy, that I am prepared to call it Swedish exoticism. Or why not the unique difference? ”

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

The house “More and more people are talking about it – and no one who has been here will ever forget it.
